Understanding Tokenized Stocks: The Bridge Between TradFi and DeFi

Tokenized stocks represent one of the most exciting developments in the convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance. By bringing equities on-chain, they unlock new possibilities for investors around the world who have been excluded from U.S. stock markets by geography, regulation, or minimum investment requirements.

A tokenized stock is a digital token on a blockchain that represents ownership of a share in a publicly traded company. The token issuer holds the actual shares in reserve and mints tokens on a one-to-one basis. When you purchase a tokenized stock, the underlying share exists in a custodial account managed by the issuer. The token you hold serves as a digital certificate of your ownership claim.

The benefits of this model are numerous. Settlement is near-instant compared to the one or two business days required in traditional markets. You can trade tokenized stocks 24/7, not just during market hours, although prices are typically more volatile outside of regular trading sessions. Fractional ownership is inherent to the token model, allowing you to invest any amount in any stock. And because the tokens live on a public blockchain, you have full transparency into the total supply and can verify reserve backing.

There are also important considerations to keep in mind. Tokenized stocks are still a relatively new financial instrument, and the regulatory landscape is evolving. Price tracking may not be perfectly aligned with the underlying stock at all times, particularly during periods of low liquidity. And while the token issuer maintains the reserve backing, there is counterparty risk associated with the custodial arrangement.

On Envestir, tokenized stocks are called xStocks and are traded on the Solana blockchain. You can buy and sell them against USDC using the Jupiter aggregator, which finds the best available price across multiple liquidity sources. With over 50 xStocks available, you can build a diversified portfolio of U.S. equities entirely on-chain.
